Many Medical Tourists Not Covered Abroad

 With medical tourism  on the increase, especially for the over-50 age group, the Department of health has warned those travelling overseas for treatment, including dental, cosmetic and medical work, that they should ensure they have appropriate cover before they travel.

 There have been reports that a large number of medical tourists are not taking out any medical or travel insurance at all, and hoping that the European Health insurance  Card (EHIC) will be sufficient if there are any problems. Although the EHIC card allows you to access state provide health care in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge, it does not apply to those who travel to another country for treatment.
